Tōhoku
東北
Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.

山の形
The Yama no Katachi project began in 2014 in Yamagata Prefecture, led by designers Shibayama Shūhei and Sudō Osamu. The pair collaborate with local artisans and craftspeople, blending modern design with long-established techniques to produce contemporary tools and household items. By preserving the wisdom and experience of the local community, who historically adapted their tools and lifestyles to the unique and sometimes challenging climate of Yamagata, the project aims to ensure the continuation of these techniques for future generations.
