A small bento box handcrafted by experienced craftspeople in Ōdate, Akita Prefecture and designed specifically for children.

£195 per item

This bento box is handcrafted by experienced craftspeople in Ōdate, Akita Prefecture, who have reduced the box’s scale to make it especially suited to children.
The craft of mage-wappa is used to form the bento box, a technique regional to Ōdate, Akita Prefecture. Thinly sliced strips of Akita cedar are carefully boiled and bent into a circular form, then sewn together using sakura (cherry blossom) bark. Renowned for its attractive even grain, Akita cedar possesses a moisture-absorbing quality that preserves the flavour of freshly cooked rice, even when served cold. It is also fortified with a polyurethane coating, which protects the wood from oily or strong-coloured foods.
This smaller bento box was designed to introduce younger people to the benefits of natural materials, fostering a sense of sustainability and the importance of caring for belongings over a long period of time, through repeat usage.

Before using, it is recommended to rinse with lukewarm water several times and dry in a well-ventilated place to prevent the absorption of bad smells or stains.
Use a mild detergent when washing and wipe with a dry cloth and dry facing upwards.
Not suitable for dishwashers, gas cookers, ovens, strong cleansers, bleach, or scourers.
Do not soak in water over a long period of time.
