A celadon-white porcelain cup and saucer featuring zōgan (inlay) lines, produced by Hidaka Shinji in Okayama Prefecture.
This demitasse-sized cup features subtle coloured stripes and is created by ceramicist Hidaka Shinji. Inspired by ancient ceramics, Hidaka works with a range of techniques, including celadon-white porcelain, achieved through firing with a glaze containing iron, and zōgan (inlay), in which curved patterns are filled with red or white clay, bisque-fired, then glazed and fired again.
Rather than relying on the natural unpredictability of clay or fire, Hidaka creates each piece with clear concept in mind. He also selects materials with traceable origins in order to understand their properties and shortcomings himself.
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1972, Hidaka completed a master’s programme in Oil Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, followed by studies at Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Technical College. He built a kiln in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture and relocated to Okayama in 2016.
Not suitable for use in a microwave or dishwasher.
