This plate is one of many products created at the Shobu Gakuen support centre in Kagoshima, which offers a safe, welcoming environment for people with learning disabilities, and which promotes interaction with local communities through collaboration, and creative and cultural activities. These plates were made in woodworking workshops, part of Shobu Gakuen’s mission to support independent work and creative expression. Rather than following a specific design, these plates were each made individually, reflecting the distinctive decisions of the person who carved the plate before going on to cover it in urushi, a sap derived from the Japanese lacquer tree.
