Nōtō hiba, a species of cypress native to Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan, contains a natural chemical compound called hinokitiol. Hinokitiol has long been used for its natural disinfectant, antibacterial and insect repellent properties. It was these qualities of hiba wood that led people centuries ago to favour it as a material for building shrines and temples. This natural compound is present in essential oil derived from hiba wood, which has been added to distilled water to create this disinfectant dispenser. Hiba wood is also known for its special, relaxing scent, which is even more apparent thanks to its deodorising properties.
