In recent decades kendama have gained international popularity with competitions being held both in Japan and overseas. Kendama is a centuries-old Japanese skill-toy derived from the classic cup-and-ball game. The game is played by pulling holding the handle, ‘throwing’ up the ball which is attached by a string and attempting to catch it with either the cups on the side or the spike at the top. As well as a variety of grips with which kendama can be held, there are numerous tricks that can be performed while playing it, adding layers of difficulty that challenge the player’s dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
