This set of 5 pairs of chopsticks are made of hinoki wood, a species of cypress native to Japan. Hinoki, Japanese cypress is widely used as building material for houses, as well as furnitures and tools due to its innate antibacterial and insect repelling properties. For added resilience and elegance, these chopsticks are coated with a fine layer of urushi, a sap derived from the Japanese lacquer tree. From furniture to kitchen items such as bowls, cups and plates, urushi is often used as a varnish on household objects providing an extra protective layer that not only protects them but gives them a distinctive aesthetic look.
