Money Envelope – River Play

A small envelope made of high-quality Japanese paper.

£9.00 per item

Pochibukuro are small envelopes used to gift money in Japan. Etiquette requires that money be put into an envelope when given as a tip or a gift, including when given to children as part of the New Year celebrations. Decorations adorning these pochibukuro are therefore often symbolic in meaning and serve as well wishes for the receiver.
The design of this pochibukuro is called kawa-asobi, literally ‘river play’ and features river crabs called sawagani, which are a common sight in streams and rivers during warmer months of the year. In some areas, crabs symbolize wealth and a symbol of protection for sailors. The pattern on this pochibukuro is printed using silk screen printing on handmade inshu washi, Japanese paper.
