Scenery of Gifu Postcard – Morning Market

A woodblock printed postcard featuring the scenery of Gifu Prefecture.

£3.00 per item

This postcard is printed using the method of woodblock printing, adopted in Japan during the Edo-period (1603-1868 CE) for printing books and creating decorations, produced on both paper and canvas. To create these postcards, reliefs of the original design are carved by hand into wooden blocks, using one block for each colour involved. Each finished image displays the skill that has gone into the carving of the many woodblocks used for a single print.
This postcard features the stalls of the Jinya-mae morning markets of Takayama, the tradition of which dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868 CE).
