This rice bowl has a distinctive pattern, an intricate network of fine lines created from a crackle glazing technique. This is achieved when the pieces are fired, as the variation in the shrinkage rate between the body of clay and the surrounding glaze causes fine cracks to form. Once the firing is complete, a red pigment is applied to the cracks to highlight the intricate motif, leaving the rice bowl with a subtle pink hue. This signature red pigment is known as sennichi-zuri, a name that is derived from the process of pulverizing the pigment into a fine powder over the course of 1000 days.
The size, material and aesthetic of this rice bowl has been extensively prototyped, with over 200 versions being trialled to test its suitability for a contemporary lifestyle. As a result, the foot of the bowl has been made relatively larger to increase the stability of the form, and the size of the body has been reduced so it can be comfortably held in one hand.

Handwash only.
