Washi Card Set

A set of washi, Japanese paper, cards handmade in Kagoshima by people with learning disabilities.

£11.00 per item

This set of washi cards is one of many products created at a support centre in Kagoshima, called Shobu Gakuen, which offers a welcoming environment for people with learning disabilities. The centre promotes interaction with local communities through cultural exchange, collaboration and creative activity. Through its workshops, Shobu Gakuen aims to enable disabled people to act with independence and express their creativity. These washi cards were created in workshops at papermaking studios. To create washi, a viscous substance derived from plants is added to a pulp mixture made from plant fibres and water. This mixture is placed on a bamboo-netted frame screen and then rocked back and forth and from side to side so the mixture flows over the screen. Differences in motion produce washi of varying texture.

Avoid moisture and open flames.
