Although there are records of grapes grown in Japan from 718 AD, wine production only began in the latter half of the 19th century during the Meiji Restoration. The main winemaking region is Yamanashi Prefecture with other notable areas being Hokkaido, Miyazaki Prefecture and the southern island of Kyushu.
