Komaruya

小丸屋

Komaruya are the longest running fan makers in Kyoto and are well known for the quality of their handcrafted fans. The company was established by Emperor Ōgimachi’s official fan makers, the Sumii family, in the late 1500s CE. Based in the Fukakusa district of Kyoto, they had access to abundant bamboo necessary for sustaining a high level of production. Hand-held fans flourished in popularity throughout Edo period (1603-1868 CE) Japan.
