Tomioka Shōten was established in 1970 and specializes in kabazaiku, cherry bark craftwork. The wild cherry bark is collected cyclically using a harvesting practice that started during the Jōmon period, approximately 7,000 years ago, and helps preserve the natural resources of the mountains. Through whittling and polishing the bark, the craftsmen create highly sophisticated and functional lifestyle objects that retain and celebrate the natural characteristics and patterns of the wood from which they are created.
