Wada Sanzō (1883-1967) was a Japanese artist, costume and kimono designer, teacher, and researcher of colour theory. He saw colour not only as a simple, decorative element but as a useful tool for complex communication and expression. He founded the Japan Standard Color Association (present-day Japan Color Research Institute) in 1927, laying the foundations for contemporary colour research. He has received accolades including the 1954 Academy Award for Best Costume Design, for Gate of Hell, and the Person of Cultural Merit award from the Japanese government, in 1958.
