Aramaki tenugui – Salmon print

An ARAMAKI tenugui inspired by industrial printing on wooden salmon boxes from Hokkaidō.

£35 per item

This ARAMAKI tenugui is a simple thin cotton cloth with multiple uses such as gift wrapping, as a protective layer for everyday items, or for drying hands, It is adorned with a pattern inspired by the industrial prints on wooden salmon boxes from Hokkaido.
Aramaki salmon is a local delicacy of salted, preserved salmon from northern Japan. The brand ARAMAKI was set up to use the existing production line of wooden salmon boxes to create a range of products, from furniture to calendars, in reaction to the waning number of wooden boxes being used in salmon fishing today.
This motif comes from the boxes of local salmon company, Shakenomarugame, and compiles detailed graphics that communicate the type, origin, and grade of the salmon, along with the trade name of the processing company on the side of the boxes. The pattern is printed in four colours in order to replicate the colours and print quality found on the boxes.
The graphics were originally produced in collaboration with design studio Kagikakko as a poster for the ARAMAKI exhibition held in Asahikawa City, in 2019.

Avoid leaving the cloth in water over a long period of time as the ink can bleed.
