DIY Wooden Kit – Masu

Designed by Urban Ole Ecopark in Nara Prefecture, this DIY woodworking kit provides users with the experience of assembling a masu, a small square vessel originally used as a unit of measurement applied to foods such as rice and soy sauce, and in recent times used with a glass to drink sake.

Created in collaboration with renowned masu producers, Masuya, the kit reuses offcuts of architectural timber comprised of hinoki (Japanese cypress), a material often chosen for crafting masu due to its natural durability, moisture resistance, and anti-bacterial qualities.

The kit contains wooden hinoki parts, a ceramic sakazuki (sake cup), and tools to create the masu. When the masu is complete, it can be used as a saucer for the sakazuki, as a vessel for snacks, or even to store small objects. Compared to many DIY kits, this kit is simple to assemble and recommended for those unfamiliar with woodworking.

The kit does not include a hammer, however, any standard hammer will be sufficient.

Hand wash and store dry.

Not suitable for the oven, microwave, or dishwasher.

Materials include a piece of sandpaper, wooden parts, ceramic sakazuki (sake cup), rice glue, cotton bud, and four nails.
