Foldable Hinoki Sunoko Bath Mat

This hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath mat is crafted in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture, which sits between the leading timber production regions of Yoshino in Nara Prefecture and Tōnō in Gifu Prefecture. The foldable bath mat is designed to sit under a fabric bath mat, allowing air to circulate and preventing moisture from accumulating.

The fragrant hinoki is sourced from the region of Tōnō and has a uniform quality. The tree’s equally spaced growth rings lead to an even grain and minimal knots, enhancing its natural water resistance and durability, making it the ideal material for a bath mat. The surface is planed rather than sanded to preserve the grain of the wood, creating a water-repellent finish that is highly resistant to decay and which has a distinct lustre.

The ridges on surface of the wood create space between the fabric bath mat and the hinoki, increasing airflow. The mat also folds into a convenient rack for drying the fabric mat after use, and for easy storage. Other design details include wooden hinges, created to prevent rust, and non-slip stoppers on the base to keep the bath mat securely in place during use.
