A collection of animal-themed haiku, from classical masters to modern writers, accompanied by visual art.
Haiku is a form of poetry that captures a moment of experience or a fleeting impression. This selection pairs haiku with paintings and prints depicting animal life, highlighting connections between humans and nature, and between poetry and visual art.
The volume includes works by 17th- and 18th-century haiku masters such as Matsuo Bashō, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa, alongside compositions by contemporary writers. Horses, dogs, and a variety of birds appear throughout, illustrating the diversity of the natural world and the enduring presence of animals in Japanese literary and artistic traditions. The volume is organized into six sections, tracing the course of a day from morning to night.
