A touching, bilingual collection of short form poetry on the topic of love, accompanied by Japanese paintings and prints from the British Museum.
Haiku Love is a collection of haiku (a short form of poetry that consists of three lines, the first line with five syllables, then seven in the second and five to finish) alongside senryū (similar in construction to haiku, however, tending to focus on human nature with a satirical dark humour). The collection captures the many facets of love, from the melancholy to the compassionate to the tender. The poems are presented in both Japanese and English, newly translated by Alan Cummings. The collection spans the 1600s to the present day, and the poems are accompanied by Japanese paintings and prints from the British Museum.
Alan Cummings is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Japanese studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies. After completing a PhD in 19th-century kabuki (a historical Japanese theatrical form that mixes dramatic performance with dancing and singing) he has taught courses on translation and Japanese language and literature. His research covers Japanese classical theatrical forms and post-war performance.
