An artist’s book featuring works by ceramic artist Hatta Toru from his 2025–26 solo exhibition world tour.
This photographic monograph on Hatta Toru was released to accompany his 2025–26 solo exhibition world tour. The works featured in the book form part of the exhibition and include a range of his pieces, from teapots to tile plates.
Close-up photography highlights the distinctive textures of the pieces and the material qualities of clay. The book also documents his working process, with images of the anagama (a wood-fired kiln with a tunnel-like structure) and scenes of Hatta at the potter’s wheel, accompanied by text that explores the philosophy behind his practice.
Hatta Toru is a ceramic artist born in 1977 in Ishikawa Prefecture and now based in Sakai, Osaka.
His main work involves kohiki, a decorative technique in which the clay body is covered with white slip (a liquid mixture of clay) and transparent glaze. He is particularly meticulous in his selection of materials and control of the firing process. This approach allows for the emergence of deep colours and natural surface characteristics, resulting in pieces that are understated, refined and easy to use in daily life.
