平清水焼碗
A delicate dark green rice bowl from Yamagata Prefecture.
This rice bowl features a beautiful matt, dark green colour and an earthy texture. Handcrafted with expert skill, this bowl is made using iron-rich soil from the local area of Hirashimizu Village, Yamagata Prefecture, producing a special hue that resembles the colour of a mossy forest floor. The firing process involves the addition of natural materials such as pine ash, which further enhance the natural feel of the bowl. Crafted with a focus on expertise rather than ornate design, this rice bowl is meant for everyday use.

Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
