A personal memoir of Tanimoto Kiyoshi, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.
This book is based on the newly discovered firsthand account of the Hiroshima atomic bombing by Tanimoto Kiyoshi, a thirty-six-year-old Methodist minister at the time. Tanimoto was on the outskirts of Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped at approximately 08:15 on 6 August 1945. Returning to the city centre in search of his wife and infant daughter, he encountered the devastation wrought upon the city and witnessed the suffering caused by radiation exposure. He went on to dedicate himself to rebuilding his city, securing food, shelter and medical care for survivors, while helping to identify and bury the dead in an effort to provide dignity where possible.
Tanimoto was one of six survivors included in American journalist and writer John Hersey’s landmark 1946 book Hiroshima. However, Hiroshima, 8:15 is a memoir that offers Tanimoto’s own eyewitness account of the immediate aftermath of the bombing, providing a deeply personal perspective on one of history’s most devastating events.
Tanimoto Kiyoshi was a Japanese Methodist minister who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. He became widely respected for his humanitarian work with the Hiroshima Maidens, a group of 25 young women who were left disfigured by the bomb. His experiences were later recorded by the American writer and journalist John Hersey in his landmark book Hiroshima. More recently, Tanimoto’s own firsthand account of the bombing and its aftermath was published for the first time in Hiroshima, 8:15.
