This book documents interviews and photographs of seven craft people featured in the JAPAN CRAFT ‘Hyakkō no Design‘ exhibition, held by MUJI (Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd.) in 2023. An English-language booklet was added for the London exhibition Hyakkō: 100 Makers from Japan.
Through interviews and visual records of seven contemporary Japanese craftspeople and groups, this book explores the diversity of craft shaped by region, material, generation, and ways of living.
The concept of Hyakkō, the countless forms of making, emerges from everyday life. Working with materials such as clay, wood, metal, and lacquer, these makers create vessels and tools rooted in their local environments and lived experience. By embracing the irregularity and chance inherent in handcraft, their work reflects a distinctly Japanese sensibility that values imperfection and finds beauty in the incomplete.
The book presents craft not as a fixed tradition, but as a living practice that connects past and future.
Nagata Takahiro (Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd.), who curated the Hyakkō: 100 Makers from Japan exhibition, has been led the design and direction of ATELIER MUJI Gallery and its exhibitions in Japan and overseas since 2011. He also served as editor of this book.
