These fumikou (paper incense for letters) are handcrafted in Ichikawa Misato, Yamanashi Prefecture, an area renowned for its paper-making industry which has a longstanding history spanning over 1000 years.
Typically placed inside envelopes to accompany letters, the fumikou enhance the enjoyment of receiving written mail through their subtle scent. The source of the delicate aroma is fragrant wood within the washi (hand-made Japanese paper), a blend of sandalwood, cloves, star anise, and cassia.
The fumikou can also be placed in small boxes for gifts, in drawers holding papers, or as decorative accents for table settings.
There are two variations of fumikou shaped as sakura (cherry blossoms). There is the dyed light pink tone and layered washi portraying yaezakura, a multilayered sakura and another version of three dyed pink tones showing three sakura in bloom.
