A compact, oval uchiwa (hand fan) with crafted from washi paper and bamboo in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture.
The surface of this uchiwa (hand fan) is formed by unryū washi paper, named for the long fibres embedded in within it that appear to float like clouds. The handle and ribs are made from bamboo processed in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, using local techniques, resulting in a light and supple feel. Its compact size fits comfortably in the hand.
Uchiwaya Ryō is a workshop producing domestically made bamboo fans crafted by artisans. With a history spanning over 400 years, Marugame uchiwa are known for their varied forms and patterns. Marugame is responsible for around 90 percent of Japan’s uchiwa production. The craft is recognized as a Japanese Traditional Craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
