A detailed book about shifu (cloth woven with paper thread), kami-ito (paper thread) and kigami (untreated Japanese handmade paper) by textile artist, Karuno Hiroko.
This bilingual book by Karuno Hiroko, a textile artist specializing in shifu (cloth woven with paper thread) and kami-ito (paper thread), offers detailed insight into kigami (untreated Japanese handmade paper) and the process of producing kami-ito.
Shifu originated out of the need for warm clothing and was gradually refined over time by skilled weavers into an elegant textile.
The book introduces kigami, from its production in Kadoide, a kigami-making village in Japan, to the process of making kami-ito through clear, step-by-step photography. Karuno created this book for anyone interested in making paper thread, aiming to preserve the knowledge of this delicate craft.
Karuno Hiroko is a textile artist and expert spinner, weaver and dyer of kami-ito. Based in Toronto, Canada, she has exhibited her shifu and taught numerous workshops in Japan and Canada. In 2010, she created a celebratory installation in Nara Prefecture, Japan, to mark the 1300th anniversary of Nara City’s establishment as the ancient capital.
