Japanese Village: The original Japanese scenery that dwells in the heart
日本の里–心に宿る日本の原風景–
£26.00per item
A vibrant photo book capturing the landscapes of sato (lit. ‘village’) in Japan.
This collection of photographs captures the diverse landscapes of sato (lit. ‘village’) in Japan. It explores the environments that shape communities living in close relationship with nature, such as sprawling lakes, thriving paddy fields, and forested valleys.
The images depict seasonal scenes of settlements nestled in the landscape: cherry blossoms flowering up the mountain, koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks) flying above the fields, and persimmons drying outside a barn. A glossary at the back of the book introduces key terms related to sato, alongside an illustrated encyclopedia of local flora, offering insight into life in the sato.
PIE International is a publisher specialising in visual books, founded in 1985. Its chairman, Miyoshi Shingo, was a graphic designer who was inspired to publish graphic works because he believed that sharing commercial design, often ephemeral and accessible to only a limited audience, could help people discover and support creators. This idea developed into an international network and has since become a bridge between Japan and the wider world.
