A richly illustrated survey of Japan’s jazz kissa (listening cafes) and audio heritage.
From the heart of Tokyo to the remote corners of Japan, jazz kissa have shaped the country’s listening cultures since the 1940s. Based on more than 15 years of research and documentation, this large-format hardback offers a visual survey of these spaces. Alongside carefully captured interiors, it presents the audio equipment that defines them, from Altec A7 systems and JBL speakers to bespoke amplifiers.
Richly illustrated with a considered design, the book offers a comprehensive record of Japan’s listening cafes and the enduring appeal of analogue sound.
Kusunose Katsumasa is a photographer, cultural historian and creator of Jazzkissa.jp. For more than 15 years, he has travelled throughout Japan documenting the country’s listening cafes and the people who keep their cultures alive, creating a record of Japan’s jazz kissa tradition.
