Kettle-Fired Mugwort Soap

This kettle-fired mugwort soap is handmade by Mutenka Sekken Honpo, a brand established by Marubishi Natural Soap Factory Co Ltd, which has been producing natural soaps in the Miki District, Hyōgo Prefecture since 1955.

The process involves kettle firing natural botanical oils with caustic soda for three days using firewood, then leaving them to dry and mature for three months. This results in a condensed hard soap that can be used for a long period. Kettle firing requires specific expertise in controlling the temperature and moisture levels of the environment while determining the state of ‘saponification’ (conversion into soap). At present, there are only a few craftspeople left in Japan who can execute this method. Mutenka Sekken Honpo has been producing soap through kettle firing for 64 years and helps sustain the method.

The kettle-fired mugwort soap has moisturising and calming qualities recommended for dry and sensitive skin. Mugwort has a history in Japan as a medicinal herb for stomach issues, poor blood circulation and skin ailments due to being rich in vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients include natural botanical oils, sodium hydroxide, mugwort extract, and glycerine.

Recommended for sensitive and dry skin.

Can be used for hair, skin, and face.

Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space out of direct sunlight.

As a handmade product, colour and shape may differ depending on the soap.

The soap may produce a white powder-like residue or moisture, however these are part of the soap and should be used.
