The kettle-fired rice bran soap is handmade by Mutenka Sekken Honpo, a brand established by Marubishi Natural Soap Factory Co Ltd, which has been producing natural soaps in the Miki District, Hyōgo Prefecture since 1955.
The process involves kettle firing natural botanical oils with caustic soda for three days using firewood, then leaving them to dry and mature for three months. This results in a condensed hard soap that can be used for a long period. Kettle firing requires specific expertise in controlling the temperature and moisture levels of the environment while determining the state of ‘saponification’ (conversion into soap). At present, there are only a few craftspeople left in Japan who can execute this method. Mutenka Sekken Honpo has been producing soap through kettle firing for 64 years and helps sustain the method.
The kettle-fired rice bran soap is recommended for dry, sensitive skin, particularly in winter as it is a gentle soap that also exfoliates, giving the skin a smooth finish. Rice bran contains significant amounts of of γ(Gamma)-Oryzanol which can play a role in reducing the enzyme activity that causes discolouration of the skin, blocking ultraviolet rays and benefiting blood flow.
Ingredients contain natural botanical oils, sodium hydroxide and rice bran.
Recommended for sensitive and dry skin.
Can be used for hair, skin, and face.
Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space out of direct sunlight.
As a handmade product, colour and shape may differ depending on the soap.
The soap may produce a white powder-like residue or moisture, however these are part of the soap and should be used.
