A ceramic kohiki donburi bowl by Shimomura Atsushi, crafted in Kanagawa Prefecture.
This donburi (a dish of rice topped with fish, meat, or vegetables simmered together) bowl features a distinctive crackle pattern created by Shimomura Atsushi using kohiki (a ceramic technique in which white slip is applied to the clay body and covered with a translucent glaze).
Born in 1985 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Shimomura worked as a web designer before studying pottery under Nakazato Taki of Karatsu Ryūta Kiln. He began his own practice in 2020, focusing on kohiki and black glaze. Function and modernity are key to Shimomura’s work, resulting in warm and intriguing pieces designed for everyday use.
