A natural stone-glazed celadon cup by Nabeshima Ware.
The glaze, made from 100% natural stone, gives this cup the translucent jade-green colour characteristic of Nabeshima celadon. Tea and other clear drinks are complemented by the glaze, while ice in sake or water creates an iceberg-like effect in the hand. The flowing form enables the cups to stack neatly and resembles the nodes of green bamboo.
Established during the Edo period, the Nabeshima kiln was an official kiln producing presentation wares for the Imperial Court and other prestigious recipients. Unlike private kilns, which operated commercially, it focused solely on achieving the highest standards of craftsmanship. Although the kiln closed in 1871, its techniques were inherited by later generations of craftspeople and continue today.
