Large kokeshi doll from Naruko Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture, handcrafted by Sakurai Kokeshi.
Naruko kokeshi are characterized by gentle facial expressions, defined shoulders and slightly tapered bodies. A particular feature is the squeaking sound produced when the head is gently turned. They are believed to have originated during the Edo period, when kijishi (woodturners) began making them as toys, and have since come to symbolize children’s wellbeing and growth.
Sakurai Kokeshi is a family-run workshop based in Naruko Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture. Today, the fifth and sixth generations produce kokeshi, preserving established craftsmanship while embracing new approaches to design.
Available in two floral designs: Style A with nadeshiko (a Japanese wildflower) and Style B with chrysanthemum.
Approx Ø5 x H18 cm
Tōhoku
Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
