The Nikka Tailored

This Nikka Tailored whisky is representative of Nikka Whisky’s expertise in skilfully blending malt and grain whiskies with precision and sensitivity. This blend primarily features malted barley from Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture combined with Coffey Still grain from Yoichi Distillery in Yoichi District, Hokkaido. The result is a whisky with all the quintessential roundness and softness that is distinctive to Nikka Whiskies.

The Coffey Still Grain whisky from the Yoichi distillery has a sweet fragrance with a creamy depth and subtle sweetness on the palate. It was created in the Yoichi District owing to the similarity of conditions there to those in Scotland where the founder of Nikka, Taketsuru Masataka studied the art of whisky making. The cold climate with salty sea breeze produces a briny hint and local peat bogs are reflected in the peaty notes and character of the whisky, whilst the distinctive depth is achieved through a distillation process which uses direct coal fire.

Comparatively, the Miyagikyo distillery is located amongst rolling hills and flourishing forests known for clean air and clear waters. The pots are heated by steam at a low temperature for a soft and gentle distillation resulting in an elegantly fruity malt whisky.

The nose displays the fruitiness of white-fleshed fruits alongside apple and apricot. There is also a strong presence of honey, chocolate and candied orange peel. The mouth presents the duality of pastry such as a kouglof (traditional Alsatian brioche)through the hints of vanilla paired with the bitterness of dark chocolate alongside the zest of citrus from orange and tangerine. It has a finish of fruity bitterness balanced against subtly toasted notes and vanilla sweetness.
