This book is part of a six-book series that follows 20 years of work by esteemed textile design firm, NUNO. Each book takes for its title a Japanese onomatopoeic word that evokes a particular quality of textiles. A central text explains the essence of the onomatopoeia and its connection to textiles, with an accompanying essay by a specialist from outside the textile industry exploring abstract connections and broader concepts. Additionally, the book explores the inspiration, technologies and processes that contribute towards textile production.

This book is the latest addition to the collection of Nuno books and is named after the onomatopoeia, zoku zoku which describes the chills felt from a thrilling moment. The publication presents the expressive textiles featured in the exhibition at the Ruthin Craft Centre in North Wales. It opens with an insightful introduction by Professor Lesly Millar who discusses Sudō Reiko’s ethos in designing textiles, followed by Subfloored, a story by novelist Akikawa Tetsuya capturing the sensibilities of zoku zoku.
The book introduces nine groups of textiles, each categorized by zoku (tribes), which phonetically mirrors the first half of the onomatopoeia. The distinctive groups are The Beastie Bunch, The Wild Bunch, The Cocoon Club, An Earthly Lot, Full Metal Menage, The Fossil Family, The Castoff Caste, A Fuzzy Few and The Hybrid Host.

Sudō Reiko is the Design Director of NUNO and is one of Japan’s most influential contemporary textile designers. She has worked for Mujirushi Ryōhin (MUJI) in fabric planning and development and as part of the Advisory Board since 2016. Also a member of the Japan Design Committee, she has received accolades of the Mainichi Design Award, the ROSCOE Design Prize, and the Japan Interior Design Association JID Award.
