This book follows the extensive collection of innovative and creative work produced by the textile design studio, NUNO. NUNO, meaning cloth in Japanese, was founded in 1984 by acclaimed textile designer Arai Junichi and, the current Design Director, Sudō Reiko. The studio is renowned for combining weaving and dyeing traditions with the newest technologies and designing textiles that integrate unexpected materials including paper, aluminium and feathers through industrial processes such as chemical etching and spatter plating. Each NUNO textile is crafted in Japan, through the skilled handiwork of its craftspeople and has a distinct narrative.
The book collates a collection of interviews, factory visits, archival research and texts which are accompanied by specially commissioned photography and drawings to form a comprehensive NUNO monograph. It is categorized into chapters around the most influential, experimental and compelling families of textiles and includes essays from a wide range of contributors from designer Hara Kenya, writer Murakami Haruki and architect Itō Toyō.
Sudō Reiko is the Design Director of NUNO and is one of Japan’s most influential contemporary textile designers. She has worked for Mujirushi Ryōhin (MUJI) in fabric planning and development and as part of the Advisory Board since 2016. Also a member of the Japan Design Committee, she has received accolades of the Mainichi Design Award, the ROSCOE Design Prize, and the Japan Interior Design Association JID Award.
