This cup was created in the oribe-yaki style using a wood-fired kiln in Kagawa Prefecture. Oribe-yaki, which first appeared in Japan in the 16th century CE, was revolutionary at its time. The style is characterised by vivid colours and eccentric shapes, resulting from a moulding process instead of a pottery wheel. Oribe-yaki emerged in a period of technological advance in ceramics, driven by the growing influence of chadō (lit. Way of Tea), the practitioners of which attributed great importance to the ceramics they used. To produce the lustre and green colours for which oribe-ware is known, its glaze must be fired at temperatures of over 1000 degrees Celsius. This process of firing, first made possible by the introduction of multi-chambered climbing kilns, requires constant and painstaking monitoring and manual adjustment.

The island of Shikoku is divided into four prefectures. All of these can be visited on the 88-temple Buddhist pilgrimage around the island. The area is also home to Naoshima, a small island in the Inland Sea, known for its many contemporary art installations and museums while the Tokushima Prefecture is famous for its cultivation of Japanese indigo.
