Postcards with carpentry tool illustrations by Philippe Weisbecker for Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum.
Postcards of carpentry tools illustrated by Philippe Weisbecker, an artist and illustrator based in Paris and Barcelona. He created a collection of illustrations of carpentry tools from Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum during a four-month artist-in-residence program at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. There are three variations of postcard: kanna, sumitsubo and nokogiri.
The kanna is a hand plane that is pulled rather than pushed, used to smooth surfaces and square the edges of timber.
The sumitsubo is an ink pot utilised by carpenters to draw straight lines. It does this by snapping an ink-coated line of silk string onto the surface of the wood, similar to a chalk line tool.
The nokogiri is a wide blade ripsaw that cuts vertically along the grain of the timber.
Size : 10.2 x 15.2cm
The Kansai region includes the second-most populated metropolitan area in Japan with its largest city Osaka. Kyoto and Nara, two of Japan’s former capital cities, are home to important temples and shrines and strongholds of intangible cultural heritage, such as the Kyoto textile weaving skills of Nishijin.
