This bamboo tray is made of mōsō bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) produced in the Mabi area of Okayama Prefecture, known for its cultivation of high-quality bamboo shoots. In order to maintain the local bamboo groves and use this highly sustainable material effectively, the Laminated Bamboo Lumber Project was launched in 2003 and produces a range of products, among them this bamboo coaster tray. To create the laminated bamboo used to make this tray, carbonized bamboo strips are glued together using a high frequency wood joining machine. First, glue is applied to the strips then pressure is exerted on the bamboo both vertically and horizontally to bond the pieces together. The design of this tray was made in collaboration with designers from Okayama Prefectural University.
