A rust-glazed hirachawan bowl handcrafted by Nagano Daisuke in Kochi Prefecture.
This hirachawan (flat bowl) is handcrafted by Nagano Daisuke and features a distinctive surface created by a brown rust glaze – a transparent glaze containing iron. Hirachawan bowls are typically wide and shallow, which allows their contents to cool quickly making them suitable for tea in the summer months. They can also be used for serving rice and side dishes.
Nagano is both a potter and a farmer, and occasionally incorporates ash from the crops he grows into his glazes. He fires his work in a wood-fired anagama kiln. Born in Kochi Prefecture in 1982. He graduated from Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts in 2004, where he studied ceramics, and built his kiln in Kochi City in 2006. In 2013, he opened his gallery, Utsuwa Batake (lit. Pottery Farm).
As each piece is handmade, there might be individual differences.
