A pestle made from sanshō (Japanese pepper) wood in Kagoshima Prefecture for Matsunoya, a wholesaler specializing in everyday tools made from natural materials.
This pestle is made from sanshō (Japanese pepper) wood, valued for its durability and resistance to wear. It is ideal for grinding sesame seeds and nuts, as well as straining miso and other pastes. The smoothly rounded tip allows for ease of use from any angle, while the natural wood grain retains a distinctive, rustic character.
Sanshō trees are believed to have antibacterial properties. They take around ten years to mature, during which time growth rings become dense and tightly layered, enhancing the wood’s strength. Wood that is straight and large enough to be shaped into a pestle is therefore rare.
Each piece is handcrafted for Tokyo-based Matsunoya, an aramono (miscellaneous daily items) wholesaler founded in 1945.
