Ever since Haibara began producing letter sets, they have been favoured by famous writers and novelists in Japan, such as Mori Ōgai, Nagai Kafū and Kawabata Yasunari, for their excellent quality paper. The pattern of Rodger’s flower (Rodgersia podophylla), a plant native to Japan, is a design from a once popular box made by Haibara during the Meiji period (1868-1912 CE). The letter sheets of this set fold in an accordion style with perforations at the edges so they can be torn off easily. This clever design earned Haibara’s letter sets the Good Design Award in 2012.
The Kantō region is densely populated and home to a third of the country's population. It is centred around the nation's vibrant capital – Tokyo, formerly known as Edo, which has been the cultural, economic and political heart of Japan for centuries. Outside this megacity, there are mountains, onsen and ski resorts, magnificent temple complexes and excellent surfing opportunities within easy reach.
