A miniature wooden plate with a fuki-urushi (lacquered) finish, handcrafted by Ōya Takurō in Kyoto.
This miniature plate is made by Ōya Takurō and can be used as a cutlery rest or for serving sweets. The wood is hand-split and finished with fuki-urushi, a lacquering technique in which urushi (lacquer) is rubbed into bare wood, and the excess is wiped away.
Through a dialogue with the wood, Ōya creates pieces that embody both simplicity and refinement. He splits logs by hand, embracing the wood’s natural grain and irregularities, then carves each piece with a small hand plane. Although time consuming, fuki-urushi enhances the natural grain while providing a durable coating and a subtle luster.
After graduating from Kyoto Traditional Arts and Crafts University with a specialization in Woodcraft, he apprenticed to master woodworker Tsukuda Shingo. In 2018, he established his own studio in Kameoka, Kyoto.
As each piece is handmade, there might be individual differences.
