A small footed plate with tenmoku glaze by Asai Yōsuke in Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture.
This footed plate with tenmoku glaze is crafted by Asai Yōsuke and is an ideal size for serving a small dessert. Tenmoku is an iron-rich glaze developed in Japan to imitate Chinese Jian ware and is known for its deep, lustrous colours. In the glaze of this plate, yellow oil-spot markings appear over a dark brown base.
Born in 1981 in Kyoto City, Asai graduated from Kyoto Prefectural University in 2003 and began studying under ceramicist Shibagaki Rokuzō. He established his own studio in 2006 and built a kiln in Oki Town, Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture, in 2009.
During his apprenticeship with Shibagaki, Asai learned the fundamentals of making clay. He now collects raw materials to produce his own clay and glazes, spending more than half of his working time on this part of the process. This labour-intensive approach is reflected in the depth and character of his work.
As each piece is handmade, there might be individual differences.
