空が、赤く、焼けて 原爆で死にゆく子たちとの8日間
A book based on eight days of diary entries by Okuda Sadako Teiko, recounting her search for family in the aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing on 6 August 1945.
Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1914, Okuda Sadako Teiko was working as a sewing teacher on a small island approximately 35 miles from Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. Despite the distance, she sustained lasting damage to her vision and hearing on the right side. From 1960 until her retirement, she taught home economics at a non-traditional high school in Yamagata Prefecture. First self-published in April 1979, her book The Children of Hiroshima is a deeply moving account that has since been republished in several languages.
