A book on eight centuries of Japanese garden design, its history, principles, and evolution.
The book surveys more than 800 years of Japanese garden design, outlining its key characteristics, historical development and cultural context. Comprised of a series of essays, the book examines 100 representative sites, from Shinto shrines and imperial gardens to contemporary landscapes.
It considers how these gardens have evolved in relation to religious practices, social change, and shifting aesthetic principles, highlighting both continuity and adaptation within the tradition.
