Sashiko (lit. ‘little stabs’) is a needlework technique that consists of patterns embroidered using small basic running stitches in white cotton thread on blue indigo-dyed cloth. In this book expert seamstress Susan Briscoe guides those who wishes to learn sashiko. She provides a brief account of the fascinating history of the technique, and everything the reader needs to know to get started, from materials to designs, through to equipment and ways to work the stitches. Susan also includes a selection of projects with step-by-step guides and illustrations followed by a library of over 100 decorative patterns in order of difficulty, to enable readers to gradually advance through the book as their skill progresses. First introduced to the technique in the early 1990s, Susan Briscoe is a teacher of sashiko who learned the technique from local experts in northern Japan. She writes and designs for patchwork magazines and is the author of 21 Terrific Patchwork Bags.
