These vibrant koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks) are made from Yatsuo washi, a durable Japanese paper historically produced in Yatsuo, Toyama Prefecture. Raised in celebration of Children’s Day on 5 May each year, these koinobori symbolize hope for children to grow up with strength, perseverance, and success, qualities embodied by the carp, which swims upstream against the current.
Each windsock is hand-dyed using a stencil dyeing technique that dates back to the Edo period (1603–1867). These koinobori are available in black, blue and red, and come in sizes of small, medium and large to represent different members of the family.
The central Chūbu region is predominantly mountainous, home to the rugged Japan Alps with coasts on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
