A white plate with crackle glaze created by Asai Yōsuke in Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture.
This functional white plate is handcrafted by Asai Yōsuke in Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture. While it appears simple at first glance, a closer look reveals a subtle crackle glaze across the surface, giving the piece a refined character.
Born in 1981 in Kyoto City, Asai graduated from Kyoto Prefectural University in 2003 and began studying under ceramicist Shibagaki Rokuzō. He established his own studio in 2006 and built a kiln in Oki Town, Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture, in 2009.
During his apprenticeship with Shibagaki, Asai learned the fundamentals of making clay. He now collects raw materials to produce his own clay and glazes, spending more than half of his working time on this part of the process. This labour-intensive approach is reflected in the depth and character of his work.
As each piece is handmade, there might be individual differences.
